Tourists have flocked to Tunisia since the 1960s, attracted by its winter sunshine, beaches, desert and Roman remains. One of the Mediterranean's cheapest package destinations, Tunisia attracts up to 1.8 million European visitors a year. However, numbers were hit in 1990-1991 by the Gulf War and the fear of attacks by Islamic militants. Tourism employs 190,000 people and is a focus of investment. Capacity has doubled since 1980 to 140,000 beds and is set to top 200,000 beds by the year 2000. However, concern about the environmental impact is growing.
